Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts fell behind early and could never quite dig out of it, as they fell 6-5 to the Texas AirHogs Wednesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Texas (17-22) grabbed the lead in the opening, loading the bases against Alex Boshers (3-3) with singles from three of the first four batters. Brian Bistagne brought home the first run of the frame with a base hit of his own, Austin Gallagher collected an RBI with a bounce out, and a third run scored on an error.
The Wingnuts (22-16) pulled one back in the home half, as a lead-off walk to Christian Stringer came around to score on a single by Brent Clevlen.
The next half inning however, the AirHogs pushed it back to a three-run margin on an RBI single by Burt Reynolds.
Wichita drew within a run of Texas in the third. Zack Cox plated a run with a single, while a ground ball from T.J. Mittelstaedt produced his 30th RBI of the season, a club-high.
A pair of doubles by Cody Lenahan and Michael Hur in the fourth once again gave Texas some breathing room, with Hur collecting the RBI to make it 5-3.
The score remained 5-3 until the seventh, when Texas chased Boshers. Devon Rodriguez singled to make it a three-run margin again, but Fabian Roman came on to keep the lead from getting any bigger, stranding a pair.
Matt Shepherd (2-3) got rolling for Texas after giving up three in the first three innings. The righty allowed a one-out triple to Harrison Kain in the fourth, and then proceeded to retire the final 11 Wingnuts he faced.
In total, Texas pitching set down 14 in a row, ending with a walk to Martin Medina to start the ninth. Carlos Misell gave up an RBI double to Kain later in that frame, and an RBI bounce out by Leo Vargas brought Wichita within one, and put Kain at third. However, a diving stop on a ground ball to the right side by the second baseman Bistagne, saved the game for the AirHogs, ending the Wingnuts three-game winning streak.
The Wingnuts aim for a series victory over the AirHogs as the two clubs close out their series Thursday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Veteran lefty Charlie Leesman (2-2, 5.51) will be on the mound for Wichita, while Texas will turn to right-hander Cody Hebner (1-4, 5.77). First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
