Pitching Great in Win over RailCats

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (20-19) beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 2-1 at Shaw Park on Wednesday night.

Goldeyes' starter Duke von Schamann (3-4) earned the win, holding the RailCats to one unearned run on five hits in six innings pitched. von Schamann walked one and struck out four, and has walked two batters or less in all eight of his starts this season.

"I thought both sides pitched well," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney . "We just pitched a little bit better and caught a big break. Duke was excellent today. He gave us the six innings that we needed. The bullpen was fresh, so we felt like six was about all we needed from Duke. He didn't go out there with his best arm speed or his best stuff, but he stayed under control, had good body control, and he still had four good, quality pitches that he could throw. He used both sides of the plate well."

Gary SouthShore grabbed the lead in the top of the third. Elbert Devarie led off with a single to left and took second on a groundball to third from Jared Mederos. Cameron Newell reached on an error, sending Devarie to third. von Schamann struck out Alex Crosby for the second out of the inning before Brennan Metzger singled to left to drive in Devarie.

In the top of the fourth, the RailCats put runners on first and third with no outs, but von Schamann escaped the jam without allowing a run, culminating with a strikeout of Mederos to strand two in scoring position.

The Goldeyes' offence carried the momentum into the bottom of the inning. Josh Romanski singled to left leading off before getting forced out at second on a sacrifice attempt by Jacob Rogers. Rogers went to second on Casio Grider's sacrifice bunt, and scored the tying run when Carter McEachern doubled down the left field line for his first career professional hit. Ridge Hoopii-Haslam followed with a long triple to right-centre to give the Goldeyes a 2-1 lead.

"He's (McEachern) a young kid," said Forney. "He's 21 years old, and it's a tough task for kids that age and with his skill level to play in this league, but we have some bumps and bruises right now that forced him into the lineup, and obviously we're hoping that he can give us some quality at-bats. He got his first professional hit, got his first professional RBI at the same time and started our offence a little bit with 'Hoopii' following him with the triple into right-centre field. We're excited for Carter. That was a big deal. Everybody remembers those days when you get your first hit or your first strikeout or your first win, so I'm sure he's feeling pretty good about himself, and he should.

"Ridge wants to play, and Ridge comes to the park every day to play hard. His name isn't always in the lineup, but he comes in with a good, healthy attitude, and he works hard every day, and he's willing to play wherever we need him to play. He made a couple nice plays out in left field today for us to record some outs. He's done some really good things. He played well in St. Paul and got some big hits in that series, did some nice things in Lincoln. He's a good player."

von Schamann made the lead stand over the next two innings before turning things over to the bullpen. Kyle Lotzkar took over in the seventh and worked a scoreless frame, stranding the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. Cameron McVey struck out two in a perfect eighth, while Jailen Peguero stranded the tying run on third in the ninth to earn his seventh save of the year.

RailCats' (21-17) starter Charle Rosario took the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits over six innings. Rosario (5-3) walked none and struck out six.

David Rohm singled in the first inning, and has now hit safely in 13 games in a row, a new career high.

The series concludes Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Ethan Carnes (2-1, 4.97) starts for Winnipeg. The RailCats have not yet confirmed their starting pitcher.
