'Hawks Win Sixth in a Row after Record Time
June 29, 2016 - American Association (AA)
Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
Five hours and forty-four minutes is the new record for longest game in American Association history. It happened Tuesday and Wednesday when the RedHawks beat Sioux City 5-4 in 17 innings at Newman Outdoor Field. 16 innings were played on Tuesday night into Wednesday, and the league rule that a new inning cannot be started after 12:00 a.m. suspended play into Wednesday.
Right away it appeared F-M would run away with the game when they put two runs on the board in the first. Chad Mozingo scored on a single by Josh Mazzola, and then K.D. Kang drove in Keury De La Cruz. Will Mathis was the starter for the 'Hawks and he was stellar, going five shutout innings and allowing only two hits. For the Explorers, Cody Forsythe did a solid job too on the mound. He didn't allow any runs after the first and struck out nine in his seven innings.
The X's were quiet on offense all the way until the eighth when Matt Koch hit a solo shot to cut the lead to 2-1. In the ninth, Tommy Mendonca scored an unearned run to tie the game up at 2-2. Errors were the bane of the game for F-M as they made four in the contest. In the bottom of the ninth they left two on to send the game into extra innings.
The game went all the way to sixteen innings without another run being scored. Koch scored on an RBI single by Matty Johnson. To extend the game Keury De La Cruz was driven in by Brian Humphries. After that inning the game was delayed to the next day. Nate Samson scored an unearned run in the top of the seventeenth to make it 4-3 in favor of the X's. The 'Hawks responded by loading the bases with no outs to put the pressure on. Ryan Wagner tied the game thanks to an RBI by De La Cruz. Then, for the second time this season, Mazzola hit a walk-off at home.
Tyler Alexander (6-2) took the win and Ryan Zimmerman (2-5) was handed the loss. Game two of the series took place as soon as possible following the commencement of this game at Newman Outdoor Field.
