Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (25-9-3-3, 56 pts) dropped an overtime contest 5-4 to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (15-19-4-2, 36 pts) on Friday night.
Despite leading 4-1 late into the second period after scoring four-straight goals, the Fighting Saints allowed a power-play goal with under four seconds left in the second period to make it a 4-2 game into the third. That late goal started a string of four-straight by Cedar Rapids to take the game.
The Riders, with the net empty, fought all the way back to tie the game with less than 10 seconds left in regulation and eventually win in overtime.
Dubuque had a pair of long goalless streaks end on Friday, however. Seamus Powell scored his third of the year and first since Oct. 21 to give the Saints a 2-1 lead. Then, Gavin Cornforth broke a 19-game scoring drought. Cornforth's goal came on the power play as the Saints' cashed in for the third-consecutive game on the man advantage with a 1-3 night.
The Fighting Saints saw goal contributions from Chase LaPinta and James Reeder as well in the defeat.
Dylan Johnson made 22 saves in his second USHL appearance for the Saints, including a handful of sharp saves in the opening frame.
Dubuque returns to home ice on Saturday for another Cowbell Cup matchup against the Waterloo Black Hawks.
