St. Paul Saints News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The St. Paul Saints found the best medicine for a six game road losing streak, a struggling Sioux Falls Canaries team who had won just two of their last 16. The Saints offense scored double digit runs for the second straight game in a 10-6 win at Sioux Falls Stadium to earn their fourth straight victory.
With the Saints leading 1-0 in the third Brad Boyer led off with a double to right. Willie Cabrera then reached on a fielding error by the shortstop Cory Morales. Brandon Tripp, who homered twice in the Saints last game on Wednesday, deposited one over the right field wall, his 13th of the season, to give the Saints a 4-0 lead. With two outs Dwight Childs reached on an infield single, Jordan Tripp moved him to second with a single to center and Adam Frost made it 5-0 with a single to center. Dan Kaczrowski walked to load the bases and a walk to Boyer forced in a run to make it 6-0.
The Canaries made it interesting when Jared Clark hit his first homer of the game and 11th of the season, a solo shot to left, to make it 6-1.
In the fifth the Canaries got a leadoff triple from Nick Van Stratten, who then scored on a ground out by Morales to make it 6-2. Marcos Rodriguez hit his second homer of the season, and first with the Canaries, when he a solo homer to straightaway center to make it 6-3. Saints starter Anthony Claggett would pitch 6.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits while walking four and striking out six.
The Saints put the game away with a four run sixth. Kaczrowski led off with a walk. He then moved to third when catcher Kevin Dultz tried to pick him off, but his throw went into right field allowing Kaczrowski to take third. Boyer drove him home with a single to center giving the Saints a 7-3 lead. With two outs Ole Sheldon and Jose Hernandez walked to load the bases. Childs then hit a bouncer up the middle that drove home a pair. Centerfielder Van Stratten's throw to third was off target which allowed Hernandez to scamper home and make it 10-3.
The lead appeared to be safe, but the Canaries put up three in the seventh off of reliever Billy Soule. Morales led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Rodriguez knocked him home with a single to make it 10-4. Clark crushed a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for his second homer of the night and 12th of the season to finish the scoring.
Mikey Mehlich and Matt Meyer tossed the final 2.0 innings and didn't allow a run on one hit while striking out three.
It is the first time this season the Saints have scored double digit runs in back-to-back games.
The same two teams meet in the second game of the three game series on Saturday evening at Sioux Falls Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Mark Hamburger (1-2, 5.26) to the mound against Canaries LHP Adam Champion (3-2, 6.40). The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM.
