Wingnuts Take Down Sioux City

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (27-14) beat the Sioux City Explorers (17-23) 13-5 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Friday night.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Ryan Khoury, Jake Kahaulelio, and John Rodriguez drew consecutive walks against Explorers' starter Preston Olson to load the bases with no outs. C.J. Ziegler followed with a grand slam home run on a line drive to right-center field to put the Wingnuts in front for the rest of the night.

In the bottom of the second, David Amberson was hit by a pitch with one out and took second on a groundball single to right field from Khoury. Kahaulelio made it 5-1 with an RBI single through the right side. Khoury and Kahaulelio took an extra base on Peter Barrows' throw to the plate, and both scored when Rodriguez singled up the middle.

Sam Judah hit a two-out, two-run inside-the-park home run in the third, while Alberto Espinosa hit an RBI double down the right field line in the fourth to trim Wichita's lead to 7-4.

Josh Stone and Andrew Aizenstadt worked perfect relief innings in the seventh and eighth respectively.

Kahaulelio made it 8-4 with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly, while the Wingnuts scored five times in the bottom of the eighth to break the game open. Brent Clevlen reached first on a one-out, infield single and moved to second when Abel Nieves walked. Cole Armstrong followed with a three-run home run to right field. Kahaulelio added a two-out, two-run double to left-center later in the inning to extend the lead to 13-4.

Sioux City scratched out a run in the top of the ninth on an Espinosa groundout before Daniel Bennett struck out Brian Bistagne to end the game.

Anthony Capra started for the Wingnuts and earned the win, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in seven innings. Capra walked one and struck out five.

Olson took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on six hits in six and one-third. Olson walked four and struck out five.

Luke Murton hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the first to give Sioux City a brief 1-0 lead.

Khoury had three hits, reached base five times, and scored four runs. Kahaulelio had four RBIs in the win. Ziegler becomes the first player in the league to reach 50 RBIs for the season. Nieves' 19-game hitting streak was snapped. Nieves hit .500 (38 for 76) during the streak which is tied for the second-longest in team history.
