Saints Bitten by Dogs in 7-6 10 Inning Loss

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints had no answer for Chicago Dogs outfielder Tony Rosselli. They gave up three home runs to the second-year player and despite coming back from a 4-0 deficit, lost 7-6 in 10 innings on Thursday night at CHS Field in front of 6,570.

With the game tied at five in the 10th, Rosselli clubbed his third homer of the night, and third of the season, with a solo shot to left giving the Dogs a 6-5 lead. Rosselli finished the night 3-5 with three homers, five RBI and three runs scored. Reliever Ken Frosch then walked Keon Barnum before exiting for Ryan Schlosser. Jordan Dean lined a single into center putting runners at first and second. Harrison Smith's grounder in the hole between short and third was fielded on the backhand by shortstop Blake Schmit who got the lead runner at third. Larry Balkwill made it 7-5 with an RBI single to center.

In the bottom of the inning the Saints had a golden opportunity to tie the game as Brady Shoemaker led off with a double to right-center. Burt Reynolds drew a walk and, with one out, Devon Rodriguez' RBI single to center scored Shoemaker to cut the deficit to one. The Dogs brought in Josh Goosen-Brown, who was the losing pitcher in game two of the doubleheader the day before when the Saints got a walk-off victory. The Saints weren't so fortunate this time as the game ended on a bizarre play. Jeremy Martinez flew out to center and Reynolds bluffed the tag to third. Rosselli's throw to third glanced off the glove of the third baseman Dean. Reynolds, noticing no one was covering third, raced to the bag, but Dean picked up the ball and dove at Reynolds, tagging him out to end the game.

For the second consecutive game the Saints dug themselves an early hole as the Dogs scored four in the first. With one out Edwin Arroyo's grounder to first hit the lip of the grass and went under Rodriguez' glove for a single. Trey Vavra singled up the middle putting runners at first and third. Kelly Dugan gave the Dogs a 1-0 lead with an RBI single to right. That brought up Rosselli who hit his first homer of the night, a three-run shot to left-center making it 4-0 Dogs.

The Saints responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Josh Allen led off with a single to left-center and that's when former Major Leaguer D.J. Snelten lost control of the strike zone. He walked three consecutive hitters, including Shoemaker, to force in a run making it 4-1. With two outs, back-to-back RBI singles from Blake Schmit and Rodriguez made it 4-3. Rodriguez finished the night 3-4 with three RBI.

In the third Rosselli made it 5-3 Dogs with a solo homer to left.

The Saints tied it in the sixth when Shoemaker led off with a single to left. Back-to-back walks to Reynolds and Schmit loaded the bases. Rodriguez' sacrifice fly scored Shoemaker to make it 5-4. Martinez' ground rule double plated Reynolds to tie the game at five. With runners at second and third and one out, Dan Motl hit a grounder to third. Schmit tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate. Josh Allen ended the inning with a ground out to third.

The Saints welcome in the Sioux City Explorers for the first of a three game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at CHS Field. The Saints send RHP Nick Belzer (0-0, 2.25) to the mound against Explorers RHP Max Duval (0-1, 6.00). It is Game of Throwns Night with Xcel Energy Friday Night Fireworks featuring the music of royalty.
