Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Casey Sadler and Jesus Liranzo held the Clippers to five hits, and the Indians blanked Columbus 7-0 on Saturday night. Sean Rodriguez hit his first home run in a Tribe uniform in the victory.
The Indians (47-39) posted their league-leading 10th shutout of the season behind another brilliant spot start by Sadler. Facing the Clippers (45-42) for a 12th time in his career, the right-hander frustrated the visitors from the get-go. Columbus stranded six total baserunners through the first four innings, including two as Sadler capped the fourth by striking out Todd Hankins.
While Sadler sailed along, Indy grabbed the lead thanks to a miscue by Clippers starter Mitch Talbot (L, 2-3). Jose Osuna opened the bottom of the second with an infield single to third and reached second on a Kevin Kramer single to left. Ryan Lavarnway was then hit by pitch to load the bases.
Jason Martin, playing in just his eighth career Triple-A game, bounced a slow grounder to the first-base side of the mound. Talbot attempted to barehand and fire to the plate, but he juggled the baseball. His recovery attempt to nab Martin at first was wide of the bag, giving every runner an extra base to make it 2-0.
Rodriguez's blast opened the fifth. The major league rehabber cranked a 2-2 changeup from Talbot onto the left-field berm.
The Tribe busted the game wide open in the eighth with four runs, all charged to Jeff Beliveau. The Clippers lefty walked Adam Frazier, Osuna and Lavarnway, sandwiching a wild pitch between the free passes to give Indy its fourth run. Martin poked a run-scoring single ahead of an Eric Wood two-run double that capped the frame.
Sadler (W, 5-3) surrendered just five hits and one walk with five punchouts, just three days after recording the final six outs during Indy's Fourth of July win over Louisville. Liranzo tossed a season-high three frames to complete the shutout.
The Indians and Clippers conclude their first-half play with the series finale on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. EDT. The Tribe will send right-hander J.T. Brubaker (4-3, 3.77) to the hill against left-hander Adam Wilk (3-6, 4.15).
