From the Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Tyler Eppler moved into a three-way tie for most wins in the International League with nine after posting 7.2 innings of two-run ball last night in a 5-2 victory over the Clippers. The Indians scored three times in the seventh thanks to four consecutive two-out singles by Kevin Newman, Sean Rodriguez, Adam Frazier and Jose Osuna, the last three driving home runs. Tanner Anderson recorded the final four outs for his second save in three chances. Jason Martin hit a two-run homer in the fourth that momentarily moved Indy in front 2-1, but Eric Haase made it 2-2 with a solo shot to start the fifth. Clippers starter Adam Plutko struck out 11 over six innings, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks. Osuna reached base in each of his four plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with one RBI, one run scored and two walks.

McRAE'S DAY: Tribe pitcher Alex McRae was selected by the Pirates today. He was scheduled to start for Indy tonight before being scratched this morning, as the Pirates bullpen is thin amidst a four-game slide that has been bookended by 17-run performances by Los Angeles (NL) and Philadelphia. McRae, 25, was 3-7 with a 4.61 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) for Indy this year. He went 1-0 with a 0.71 ERA (1 ER/12.2 IP) and 13 strikeouts over his two most recent starts.

EPPLER AN ALL-STAR: Tyler Eppler was officially added to the International League All-Star squad today on the heels of another dynamite performance on the mound. It is the second midseason All-Star honor of his career (also: 2016, Eastern League). Eppler allowed two runs on 10 hits over a career-high 7.2 frames last night, fanning five and issuing no walks. It was his fourth start of 2018 and 10th overall in a Tribe uniform where he pitched five or more innings and did not walk a single batter. The 25-year-old improved to 12-1 with a 2.29 ERA (32 ER/126.0 IP) in 22 career games (18 starts) all-time at Victory Field. His nine wins (T-1st) and ERA (7th, 3.06) rank among IL leaders.

TWO-OUT TROUBLE: Each of Indy's eight hits last night came with two outs. Jason Martin's blast came with two down in the fourth against Adam Plutko, and all of the RBI singles in the seventh were with two away. Indianapolis is hitting .251 (95-for-379) with runners in scoring posiiton and two outs this season, the third-best mark in the IL behind Durham (.288) and Norfolk (.272).

SWING AND A MISS: The Indians fanned 15 times at the plate last night after striking out 18 times in the series finale against Louisville, the second-highest single-game mark in the Victory Field era, behind only a 20-K game for the Tribe offense on May 10, 2014 vs. Norfolk. The 33 punchouts over the last two days ties for the most by a Tribe offense in a two-game span with May 10-11, 2014. Indy followed its 20-K, 3-2 loss on May 10, 2014 against the Tides with 13 strikeouts in a 5-2 win over Norfolk.

CIRCLE CITY SUCCESS: The Indians are 25-17 at The Vic and have won 11 of their last 15 games in the Circle City. Indy has hit .272 thru its first 42 home games this season. Since 2005, that .272 home average would rank third behind the 2005 squad (.282) and 2010 team (.275). The pitching staff also has a solid 3.27 ERA at home, still well behind last year's mark of 2.84.

FIRST HALF LIKE WHOA: Kevin Newman returned to the Tribe lineup last night, making his 76th appearance among Indy's 85 games thus far. He went 2-for-4 with a run scored, his league-leading 53rd of the season. His 95 hits are the most by an individual in the Pirates minor league system this year (Jason Martin, 2nd with 92). Those 95 knocks also currently have him seventh all-time before the All-Star break among Tribe players since 2005. The top 10 list and corresponding years are below:

1. Matt Hague - 108 (2011)

2. Matt Hague - 107 (2013)

3. Josh Bell - 101 (2016)

4. Andrew McCutchen - 99 (2008)

5. Alex Presley - 98 (2011)

6. Starling Marte - 96 (2012)

7. Kevin Newman - 95 (2018)

8. Christopher Bostick - 93 (2017)

9. Alen Hanson - 88 (2015)

T-9. Brian Bixler/Chris Duffy - 88 (2007/2005)

SAVE THE DAY, CASEY: Casey Sadler will be making his 21st appearance (sixth start) for Indy tonight in game two against Columbus. The 27-year-old will celebrate his birthday next Friday when the Tribe host Toledo. Sadler has been a jack-of-all-trades for the Indians this year, fulfilling basically every role of a pitcher: starting, middle relief, long relief and closing. Since May 22, he has allowed just six earned runs in 28.2 innings pitched (1.88 ERA). During that stretch, he's gone 2-1 and walked just 2.5 batters per 9.0 innings (8 BB/28.2 IP); he walked 5.0 batters per 9.0 innings (14 BB/25 IP) across his first eight 2018 appearances.

ALL HAIL JOSE: Jose Osuna is batting .338 (53-for-157) with four homers, 19 doubles, 33 RBI and a .931 OPS in 43 games for the Tribe. Since June 3 with Indy, Osuna has batted .365 (23-for-63) with six doubles, 14 RBI and eight runs scored. His 154 wRC+ is the fourth-best mark among International League batters with at least 150 plate appearances.

BY THE NUMBERS - 7: The Pirates have selected or recalled seven different Indians players over the last 11 days. RHP Tanner Anderson was selected on 6/27, followed by INF Max Moroff on 6/29. Pitchers Nick Kingham, Dovydas Neverauskas and Josh Smoker were each recalled on consecutive days from 7/2-4. OF Jordan Luplow was recalled on 7/6 and RHP Alex McRae was selected today.
