November 1, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Nov. 1, 2007) - The 2007 ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats will begin defense of their Arena Football League title when they visit the 2006 champion Chicago Rush on Monday, March 3 in a game scheduled to be televised on ESPN2. San Jose will play its home opener on Saturday, March 15 against Western Division rival Arizona according to the schedule released by the team today.
Following the season-opening rematch of the past two American Conference Championship games, the SaberCats will travel to Grand Rapids on March 10 before hosting former defensive coordinator Kevin Guy and his Rattlers at 7:30 p.m. on March 15.
"We are very accustomed to starting the season on the road," said SaberCats head coach and general manager Darren Arbet. "But we better pack our cold weather gear for those first two games."
All eight regular season home games will be played on Saturday night at spectacular HP Pavilion at San Jose. In addition to hosting division rivals Arizona, Los Angeles (April 26) and Utah (May 17), the SaberCats will also welcome Eastern Division Champion Dallas (March 22), Southern Division Champion Georgia (June 21) and playoff participants Philadelphia (April 12), Colorado (May 24) and Tampa Bay (June 14).
San Jose's five non-division home opponents on the 2008 slate combined for a 54-26 (.675) record last season with Dallas (15-1) and Georgia (14-2) posting the top two records in the league.
Under head coach Darren Arbet the SaberCats have a regular season home record of 57-11 (.838). "As our record indicates, home games are key for us," noted Arbet. "Our loyal fans are one of the most important parts in the success of this team."
Highlights of the team's road schedule include the first-ever meeting with the Kansas City Brigade (March 29) in the new Sprint Center and a return to New Orleans, site of San Jose's ArenaBowl XXI win over Columbus, for a battle with the VooDoo on Saturday, April 5.
A premier franchise in the AFL, the San Jose SaberCats have captured three ArenaBowl titles, seven Western Division championships, eight consecutive playoff appearances and own the league's best regular season record this decade.
