Los Angeles Avengers announce 2008 schedule
November 1, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Avengers have finalized their 2008 schedule and will kick off their ninth season of play in the Arena Football League versus the New Orleans VooDoo on Friday, February 29, at STAPLES Center.
That game will serve as the official kickoff for the AFL's 22nd season. It marks the first time in Avenger history that the team will have the honor of playing in the first game of the league's season.
The Avengers' 16-game regular-season schedule is highlighted by two games against the defending ArenaBowl world champion San Jose SaberCats, who will host L.A. on April 26, at HP Pavilion and visit STAPLES Center on May 31.
In addition to the season opener versus the VooDoo and the home clash against the SaberCats, the Avengers will host six other teams at STAPLES Center, as Philadelphia (March 20), Utah (April 12), Cleveland (April 19), Arizona (May 3), New York (May 10) and Kansas City (June 15) come to Los Angeles.
The Avengers' first road game of the season on March 10, at Arizona will be televised on ESPN2. Two other Avenger games -- at Chicago on May 19, and at Utah on June 9 -- are also slated to be televised on ESPN2. Additional broadcast information regarding the remaining games will be announced shortly.
Five of L.A.'s eight home games will be played on Saturday night with kickoff at STAPLES Center set for 7:30 p.m. Each Avenger home game will feature promotional giveaways, a "Pregame Jam" outside STAPLES Center, in-arena fireworks and postgame autograph sessions.
All 17 AFL teams will play a 16-game schedule over 17 weeks with each team receiving one bye week (L.A.'s comes in Week 13).
For the third consecutive year, 12 teams will advance to the AFL Playoffs, which will begin with the Wildcard Round on June 27. ArenaBowl XXII will be played on Sunday, July 27, and televised on ABC.
