Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - Defensemen Ryan Murray (North America) of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Radko Gudas (Czech Republic) of the Philadelphia Flyers, both previously suiting up for the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League, were among the first 16 players each selected to compete for their team in the upcoming 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
The 2016 World Cup of Hockey will be held from Sept. 17-Oct. 1. Eight teams (Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden, USA, Europe and North America) will compete in the two-week tournament, featuring more than 150 of the best players in the National Hockey League. All tournament games will be played at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, home of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Murray, 22, skated for the Silvertips during three full seasons, amassing 121 points in 191 career games along with a +51 rating, adding 16 points in 20 lifetime playoff games for his WHL career. He served as captain for his two final seasons (2011-13), was named to the CHL Top Prospects Game in 2011-12 and earned back-to-back selections to the WHL (West) Second All-Star Team and either earned or shared the Silvertips Most Valuable Player Award and Most Dedicated Player Award from 2010-12.
He was selected by the Blue Jackets with the second overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and has compiled 44 points (9g-35a) and a +2 rating in 142 career NHL games. Murray joins the North American roster among the top hockey players from Canada and the United States, age 23 or under as of Oct. 1, 2016 as available to the club for selection.
Gudas, 25, was a WHL (West) Second All-Star Team honoree with 37 points (7g-30a) in 65 games and led the Silvertips with 151 penalty minutes and a single season club record of a +45 rating in 2009-10 shortly before he was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the third round (66th overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He shared the Silvertips Iron Man Award with three teammates that season and helped guide the Tips to their second highest point total (97) in club history with a 46-21-3-2 record.
He represented the Czech Republic at the World Junior Championships (Under-20) in 2009-10, one of four previous experiences on his international resume. Gudas has 38 points (7g-31a) and 322 penalty minutes in 183 career NHL games with Philadelphia and Tampa Bay.
Murray and Gudas are one of 17 WHL alumni scheduled to compete in the tournament.
