Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL -Tyler Stephenson hit the Tortugas first grand slam of the year in Daytona's 7-3 win over the Florida Fire Frogs Tuesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Ryan Olson became the second pitcher in Minor League Baseball to win each of his first four starts of the year, as Daytona earned it's fifth straight win against Florida.
Florida started the scoring before Daytona even came to the plate. Christian Pache reached on a one-out single to left and advanced to second on a TJ Friedl throwing error. Jared James would then cash in with a two-out double to plate Pache.
The Tortugas would get the run back in the bottom half. Dilson Herrera led the inning off with a double and scored on a Friedl RBI single, making up for his throwing error in the top half of the inning.
The Fire Frogs were back at it in the top of the second against Olson. Ray-Patrick Didder would reach with a one-out triple, his second of the year, and score on a Carlos Rivero throwing error.
In the bottom of the second, the Tortugas would take the lead for the first time. Rivero made up for his throwing error in the top of the inning with an RBI single, driving in Daniel Sweet. Herrera then came through for his second hit in as many innings, with an RBI single to drive in Brantley Bell to make it 3-2 Daytona.
The score would remain that way until the bottom of the seventh, when Tyler Stephenson came up with a chance to provide the Tortugas with some breathing room. After loading the bases against LHP Zach Rice, Stephenson came up and pummeled a grand slam to right field to blow the game open, 7-2.
Florida would add one in the top of the eighth, on an Omar Obregon pinch-hit single, against LHP Kevin Canelon.
Olson (4-0) becomes the first starter in the Florida State League to reach the four-win mark. He tossed his third straight quality start, going six innings, allowing four hits and two unearned runs, while striking out six.
LHP Joey Wentz (0-1) takes the loss, his first since May 8, 2017. He went 4 1/3 innings, allowed five hits, three runs, and three walks, while striking out three.
LHP Wennington Romero (1-0, 4.41) gets the ball for Wednesday's finale, as the Tortugas look for the sweep during Vystar's Wishful Wednesday at The Jack. He will be opposed by RHP Ian Anderson (0-1, 4.76) for the Fire Frogs.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:50 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
NOTES: Daniel Sweet extended his on-base streak to 25-straight with a second inning walk. He also extended his hitting-streak to 11 with a fourth inning double... Sweet has reached base in 14 of his last 18 at-bats (8 BB, 3 1B, 3 2B)... Tyler Stephenson has hit two home runs on the season, both against the Fire Frogs... Ryan Olson won his fourth start of 2018. He had just 4 career starts in two seasons prior to this year... Dilson Herrera has reached base to start three straight games. He has hit safely in nine straight games...
