Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Adam Haseley and Wilson Garcia drove in three runs each to lead the offense on Wednesday afternoon, as the Threshers completed the sweep of the Fort Myers Miracle with a 9-5 victory at Spectrum Field.
The Miracle (8-12) struck first again on Wednesday, when Travis Blankenhorn lifted a solo homer to right in the second inning to give Fort Myers the lead on his second long ball of the series.
For the third straight day, Clearwater (7-13) rallied back from an early deficit.
After Tyler Wells set down the first six to start the game, Jose Pujols worked an eight-pitch walk to lead off the bottom of the third.
Raul Rivas hit a grounder to second with the runner going, which resulted in a fielder's choice with no out recorded as the throw came in late to second. Jose Gomez then knocked a single over second to load the bases.
Wells (2-1) got a strike out of Arquimedes Gamboa, but Haseley followed with a shot off the wall in right-center that cleared the bases on a three-run double, lifting Clearwater to a 3-1 lead.
The Threshers grabbed two more in the fourth, when Mickey Moniak singled to right and Garcia knocked a double off the right field wall to open the inning. Pujols came through with a knock to left to bring home Moniak, and Rivas singled in Garcia to expand it to 5-1 Threshers.
Adonis Medina (2-2) turned in a solid start, holding the Miracle to two runs on five hits across his five innings to earn the win. Medina walked two and struck out two on the afternoon.
Fort Myers pulled closer in the sixth, capitalizing on a leadoff error to plate a pair of unearned runs off reliever Jakob Hernandez.
A turning point came in the seventh, when Alexis Rivero managed to strand the tying run at third and keep the Threshers in the lead. With Clearwater up 5-4, Mark Contreras hit a fly to right that Jose Pujols lost in the sun, resulting in a triple to place the tying run 90 feet away with just one down.
Rivero came up with a key strikeout of Luis Arraez for the second out, before a hit batter and a walk filled the bases. The right-hander worked around it, getting Joe Cronin to fly out to center to end the threat.
Clearwater broke it open in the bottom half.
Haseley's one-out double to left set off the offense, as Austin Listi followed with an opposite-field single. Darick Hall flared a broken-bat hit to right to score Haseley to make it 6-4, and Moniak followed with a single to center to again load the bases.
Garcia pulled one down the right field line for a double, bringing home all three runners to pump up the advantage to 9-4.
Blakenhorn's second homer of the game made it 9-5 in the eighth, but Jeff Singer worked a scoreless ninth to finish off the series sweep.
Clearwater will head over to Dunedin for the first of a four-game set on Thursday, with McKenzie Mills (0-1) on the hill against Tayler Saucedo (0-1). First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com starting at 6:15 p.m.
