Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, TEXAS (June 25, 2015) - The Texas Rangers announced today that Ryan Cordell and Alex Burg have been added to the Frisco RoughRiders roster from Advanced-A High Desert. In corresponding roster moves, Edwin Garcia was promoted to Triple-A Round Rock and Oliver Caraballo was assigned to High Desert.
Cordell, 23, is ranked #11 in the Rangers' farm system by both Baseball America and MLB.com. The California-native was selected in the 11th round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Liberty University. The versatile right-hander appeared in 32 games in centerfield, 17 games at third base and 14 games a shortstop with High Desert. Cordell hit .311 with 13 home runs and 57 RBI in 68 games. His 89 hits and 58 runs scored ranked second in the Carolina League.
Burg, 27, is a six-year pro. He signed a minor league free agent contract in March after two seasons in the Miami Marlins organization. In 57 games with the Mavericks, Burg knocked 15 home runs with 43 RBI and batted .302. The right-hander's .419 on-base percentage ranked second in the Carolina League. Burg had a breakout 2011 season with Advanced-A San Jose (San Francisco) where he hit .298 with 14 homers and 45 RBI.
Garcia, 24, joined Frisco from High Desert in late May. The right-handed infielder played 22 games for the RoughRiders, hitting .269 with two doubles, seven runs and five RBI. Garcia was 11-for-26 on a six-game hit streak that featured four multi-hit contests. Prior to joining Frisco, Garcia played 19 games for the Mavericks, hitting .324 with three doubles, 11 RBI and a home run. The home run was the eighth in eight professional seasons.
Caraballo, 20, did not appear in a game with Frisco after joining the club on June 17. The fourth-year pro spent the last three seasons with the Arizona League Rangers where he appeared in all three outfield spots, first base and catcher.
The RoughRiders return home on July 2 to begin a six-game home stand featuring fireworks on July 3, 4 and 5. On July 5, the first 2,000 fans will receive a free Swinging Teddy Bobblehead.
