'Hounds Blank Missions in Opener

San Antonio Missions News Release

Tim Atherton and reliever Andres Avila combined on a four-hitter as Midland cruised to a 5-0 win over San Antonio in Thursday night's series opener at Wolff Stadium.

The RockHounds wasted little time getting on the board Thursday against starter Elliot Morris, plating a pair of runs in the first on Renato Nunez's homer down the left-field line.

Midland upped its lead to 3-0 in the top of the second courtesy of a Matt Olson RBI single to right center.

The early runs (two earned) turned out to be the only ones allowed by Morris (2-7), who surrendered six hits and one walk, while striking out six over six innings. The six strikeouts were the most for the right-hander since his seven on May 15 at Midland.

Unfortunately, for Morris, Atherton, was a little better Thursday night. In eight dominant innings, Atherton (5-3) allowed just a pair of Luis Domoromo singles and two walks, while fanning seven.

Midland capped scoring in the seventh with Jaycob Brugman's two-run single off right-hander Aaron Northcraft, who carried into Thursday a 16-inning scoreless streak (as a reliever).

Avila worked around a pair of hits in the ninth to close out the RockHound victory.

San Antonio (1-2, 32-41) resumes its series against Midland (2-1, 37-36) Friday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Justin Hancock (6-3, 2.98) will get the ball for the Missions, while the 'Hounds counter with fellow righty Jake Sanchez (4-5, 5.31). The first 1,500 fans to enter the Wolff Friday will receive a free Missions' replica alternate cap courtesy of IPAC RAM.

Notes: Earlier in the day it was announced that San Antonio right-hander Colin Rea was selected to the 2015 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, which will be held at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati on Sunday, July 12 (3 PM ET). In 11 starts this season, Rea is 2-2 with a TL-leading ERA of 1.06 and a K:BB ratio of 55:11 over 68 innings.
