Rapid City Rush News Release

(Rapid City, SD) - The Rapid City Rush looked to be on their way to victory on Saturday night, but the Laredo Bucks had other plans. The Bucks scored four unanswered goals in the third period to rocket past the Rush 5-3. The loss was Danny Battochio's first since November 20th and snapped his 12-game win streak.

Just over five minutes into the game, Luke Erickson began the scoring with his 13th goal of the season. Blaine Jarvis set up Les Reaney for a shot from in front of the net with the rebound kicking to Erickson who sent home the game's first goal. Just 1:41 later, Rapid City would double their lead when Brendan Cook's turnaround pass found Scott Wray for a breakaway chance that he buried five-hole to make it 2-0. Laredo would answer two minutes later off of a defensive zone turnover by the Rush that led to Darryl Smith's team-leading 21st of the season.

The game would remain 2-1 all the way into the final minute of the period when Rapid City converted on the powerplay to double the lead. Jamie VanderVeeken's shot was stopped by Kevin Desfosses but the rebound made its way to Gio Flamminio who sent home his first goal of the season with just 30 seconds left. Prior to the goal, Blaine Jarvis was awarded a penalty shot but was unable to convert as Desfosses got enough of it with his glove to send puck over the net.

The third period was all Bucks beginning with Brent Cullaton's goal at the 5:36 mark. Smith led a 3-on-2 into the zone and found Cullaton in front of the net for a shot that beat Battochio to cut the lead in half again. Less than one minute later, Mark O'Leary would tie the contest with his 3rd of the season. Then at the 9:14 mark, Laredo would take their first lead of the game on a delayed call against the Rush. After playing keep-away from Rapid City, Paul Elliott would up for a slapshot that found the top left corner for the 4-3 lead. With 1:04 remaining, and Battochio pulled, Laredo would seal the 6-4 victory on Smith's empty net goal.

Rapid City went 1-for-5 on the man-advantage while holding the Buck scoreless on four opportunities.

The Rush now hit the road for seven road games in two weeks before returning home on Friday, February 12th against the Odessa Jackalopes. Tickets are still available for that game.
