SOUTHAVEN, Mississippi - The Missouri Mavericks lost their third straight game Saturday night, 5-1, to the Mississippi RiverKings at DeSoto Civic Center. Five different RiverKings scored goals including two on the power play as they completed the weekend sweep over the Mavericks. RiverKings' goaltender Mark Sibbald stopped 35 of 36 shots for the win, and the RiverKings improved their record to 19-15-4. Andrew Davis scored the only goal for the Mavericks on the power play, but Missouri fell to 17-19-3 on the season. The Mavericks will travel to Tulsa Tuesday night to take on the Oilers in their third and final game on this short road trip.
"Special teams cost us the game," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "It was our third game in three nights and we had no energy."
The RiverKings jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. Matt Summers scored the opening goal at the 1:53 mark on assists from Dane Marshall and Ryan Held. Mississippi made it 2-0 when Derek Landmesser scored his eighth goal of the season at the 5:34 mark. Finally, Glenn Detulleo scored his first goal with the RiverKings on a power play goal at 10:39 to make it 3-0.
Missouri answered at the 16:28 mark of the first on Davis' fifth goal of the season. The power play tally was assisted by Tyler Kindle, but it proved to be the only goal against RiverKings' goaltender Sibbald.
There was no scoring in the second period despite the Mavericks outshooting the RiverKings 12-10. Missouri earned a golden chance to get back into the game at the end of the period when Mississippi was whistled for three straight penalties. The penalties spilled over into the third period where Missouri had 1:41 of a five-on-three power play.
The Mavericks were unable to convert on the power play to start the third period, and it was Mississippi that extended the lead on a three-on-three goal. After a number of penalties, the teams were skating three-on-three and David Simoes made it 4-1. The unassisted goal came at the 10:06 mark, and Dane Marshall added to the lead just three minutes later on a power play goal. He took a feed from Simoes and blasted it past Mavericks' goaltender Gerry Festa to make the score 5-1.
The Mavericks have one more game on this three-game road trip when they head to Tulsa Tuesday, January 26. Missouri returns to Independence Events Center to start another six-game home stand on Friday, January 29. For tickets call (866) 443-8849 or visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
