Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

ALLEN, TX - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs suffered their worst loss since opening night Saturday at the Allen Events Center, falling 5-1 to the Allen Americans. Justin Bowers led the charge for Allen with five points as the Americans scored five unanswered goals in the victory.

The 'Bugs were held scoreless on seven powerplay opportunities, including two 5-on-3 powerplays of about one minute apiece. David Rutherford scored the Mudbugs' only goal as they fell to 20-14-4 for the season.

The Mudbugs opened the scoring at 6:37 of the first period when David Rutherford tipped in Clay Plume's long shot to make it 1-0 Mudbugs. Allen tied it less than three minutes later when Jordie Benn's long shot found its way through traffic and past Ken Carroll just after an Allen powerplay had expired. Bruce Graham then gave the Americans the lead at 12:16, circling the net and throwing a sharp-angle shot into the top corner to make it 2-1. Allen outshot Bossier-Shreveport 12-8 and there were also three fights during an entertaining first period.

The Mudbugs peppered Chris Whitley with 21 shots in the second period (compared to just eight for the Americans) but somehow found themselves down 4-1 after 40 minutes. Allen converted a Mudbugs' defensive zone turnover to make it 3-1 when Christian Gaudet scored at 14:50, and then Nino Musitelli finished off a great pass from Justin Bowers for the powerplay goal that extended the lead to 4-1.

Bowers got his fifth point of the night in the third period when Gaudet deflected in his shot from the right circle to provide the final 5-1 margin.

Ken Carroll made 27 saves in the game but suffered his sixth loss of the season. Whitley stopped 33 shots, including 21 in the second period alone, as the Mudbugs outshot the Americans 34-32. Allen finished 1 for 5 on the powerplay.

Bossier-Shreveport will now return to Bossier City to start its longest homestand of the season next week. The 'Bugs will start the home stretch on Tuesday night at the CenturyTel Center, hosting the Texas Brahmas at 7:05 pm. The Mudbugs are 2-2-0 against their rivals from Texas this season heading into their fifth meeting of the year.
