Odessa Jackalopes News Release
(Prescott Valley, AZ) - In a game where both teams combined for 25 penalties, 18 power plays, and one misconduct penalty, the Odessa Jackalopes held on for a 5-4 win over the Arizona Sundogs on Saturday night at Tim's Toyota Center. The Jacks swept their three-game set this week with the Sundogs to improve to 31-6-3 on the season.
After scoring a pair of third period goals to close the gap to one, Arizona was awarded a power play in the final minutes of the game and pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, but could not score the equalizer allowing Odessa to pick up their 14th one-goal win of the season.
The scoring began in the first as Kenny Bernard scored on a wrist shot from the right circle at 4:33. Mike Ramsay added the assist on Bernard's 18th of the season. Arizona countered with an unassisted goal from Marc Belanger at 16:42. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie.
The second period was headlined with 11 combined penalties called against both teams as the Jackalopes made it a 2-1 score on the power play when Sebastien Thinel tapped in a rebound at 14:43. Collin Circelli then deflected an Alex Dunn shot from the point for his 18th of the season at 16:00. Konrad Reeder made it a one-goal game again with eight seconds left in the period, on an odd-man rush, with a wrist shot in the right circle. The game was 3-2 entering the break.
Kory Karlander scored his third shorthanded goal of the season at 5:25 of the third period on a two-on-one. Then Mike Lesperance extended Odessa's lead to 5-2 at 7:02 on a left-wing feed from Karlander. Reeder's second of the game was a backhand shot in front after an Odessa turnover at 8:07. Belanger also added his second goal of the game for Arizona after missing on a breakaway opportunity, but snapping a second effort from between the top of the circles at 13:16 to make the score 5-4.
Joel Martin stopped 36 shots to grab his 16th win of the season. The win extends Odessa's win streak to six straight. Jackalopes head coach, Paul Gillis, now has 499 wins in his coaching career. Arizona's Mike Nesdill was given the game's 10-minute misconduct penalty in the second period. The final count was 54 minutes in penalties between the two teams.
