ST. GEORGE, UTAH - The St. George RoadRunners had only lost one home series opener heading into Friday's contest with the Calgary Vipers, the Golden Baseball League's defending champion. Sixteen hits and three multi-run innings later, the Vipers handily defeated the RoadRunners 13-4 on Friday night at Bruce Hurst Field.
Raymar Diaz matched his season best with 10 strikeouts over six innings despite scattering six runs on 10 hits. Diaz has lost four consecutive starts to drop to 2-6. Mark Michael went 6.2 frames allowing three runs for his first victory of the year.
Five Viper players had at least two hits with Jonny Kaplan, Drew Miller and Caonabo Cosme each registering with three. Kaplan had a solo homer while Miller's hits were all doubles.
St. George was led offensively by Carlos Sosa going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The final two games before the All Star break are Saturday as part of a doubleheader beginning at 4:05pm MDT. St. George is expected to start RHP Matt Rossignol in the opener and LHP Brian Holliday in the nightcap. Calgary will counter with LHP Brant Stickel and RHP Dusty Gober.
