Edinburg Roadrunners News Release
EDINBURG, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners rallied in the bottom of the eighth after trailing by a run to defeat the Laredo Broncos 8-5 Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Jason Diaz started the ball game with a single and then moved to second on a fielding error. After a ground-out moved Diaz to third, Kenneth Gilbert hit an RBI single scoring Diaz making it 1-0 Laredo.
In the top of the second, Roadrunner starter Eric Montoya allowed a bases loaded walk to Gilbert that allowed Ryan Flynn to score. A passed ball with the bases loaded allowed Diaz to score the second run of the inning extending the Broncos lead 3-0.
The Roadrunners (28-10) answered back in the bottom of the fourth against Santo Hernandez. Felix Molina started the inning with a walk and Wilson Batista followed with a single up the middle that put runners on the corners. Ambiorix Concepcion then hit an RBI double allowing Molina to score. Batista then came into score on an RBI ground-out by Vincent Blue making it 3-2 Laredo.
Molina started the bottom of the sixth with another walk and then moved over to third on Batista's second single of the night. Batista then stole second and Molina came into score on the throw to second tying things at three.
In the top of the seventh, Edinburg took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Wilmer Pino scoring Robert Matlock to making it 4-3.
A two-run home run by Doug Thennis off of Edinburg reliever Ray Silva (1-1) gave the Broncos (16-25) a one run lead. Trailing 5-4 manager Vince Moore was confident in his team. "I have a veteran squad. They know what they have to go out there to do," said Moore after the game.
The Roadrunners proved Moore correct as Wardell Starling started the bottom of the eighth with a single up the middle and then moved to second after Concepcion was hit by a pitch. Blue hit an infield single but a throwing error by third baseman Jonathan Cisneros allowed Starling to score tying the game at five. With runners at second and third, Carlos Hereaud hit a two-run single scoring Concepcion and Blue. Osiel Flores then followed with a two-out RBI single scoring Hereaud from second and giving the Roadrunners an 8-5 lead.
Julio Castro pitched a scoreless ninth for his league leading 12th save of the season giving Edinburg the 8-5 victory.
The Roadrunners and Broncos will play a double-header Saturday evening at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Wardel Starling (5-0) is expected to face Juan Peralta (3-0) with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Game two will start 30 minutes after the completion of game one.
