Three Curve pitchers, anchored by starter Zack Dodson, combined on a seven-hit shutout Sunday, as Altoona defeated the Akron RubberDucks, 7-0, in the wrap-up of a four-game series at People's Natural Gas Field.

Turning Point

The Curve (6-4) rallied with two outs and no one on base in the first inning as they strung together four straight singles against Akron starter Ryan Merritt (0-1). Stetson Allie and Edward Salcedo delivered back-to-back RBI singles to give the Curve a 2-0 lead.

Mound Presence

Dodson (1-0) dealt six shutout innings, holding the RubberDucks (4-6) scoreless on just four hits. Lefty reliever Tom Harlen worked two shutout innings, and Colin Balester finished with a perfect ninth. The Curve lowered their league-leading ERA to 1.78.

Duck Tales

After the first inning, Merritt settled down and worked into the seventh. At one point he retired 12 consecutive batters. He allowed 10 hits overall, but did not issue a walk. He allowed six runs, only three earned. All seven RubberDucks hits were singles. Todd Hankins beat out an infield hit in the sixth inning, extending his hitting streak to six games (7-24).

Notes

Altoona took three out of four games in the series...Curve starting pitchers only allowed one run in the series (22 IP)...It was the third shutout loss of the season for Akron...The RubberDucks loaded the bases in the eighth inning, but Harlen got Hankins to ground into a double play to end the inning...Time of game: 2:21...Attendance: 3,760.

The RubberDucks will continue the road trip with the first of three games at Reading on Monday night at 6:35. RHP Will Roberts is the expected starter for Akron, while Phillies RHP Chad Billingsley is scheduled to make a minor league rehab start for the Fightins.
