Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Akron, Ohio.) June 23, 2014 - Bryan LaHair cracked a three-run double as part of a five-run third inning Monday night, and the Akron RubberDucks cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Erie SeaWolves in the opener of a three-game series at Canal Park.
The game was delayed at the outset for 2 hours and 31 minutes due to heavy rain. Akron starter Joe Colon didn't throw the first pitch until 9:36 EST. The final out was recorded shortly after midnight, Tuesday morning.
The RubberDucks (45-32) sent nine batters to the plate in the thid inning against righthander Tommy Collier (2-6). After back-to-back RBI singles by Tyler Naquin and Francisco Lindor put Akron on top, 2-0, LaHair came to the plate with the bases-loaded. He promptly stroked a double into the right field corner, chasing home all three runs for a 5-0 cushion.
LaHair, a former National League all-star with Chicago, who is recovering from wrist surgery in the off-season, now has 40 RBI with Akron. More impressively, LaHair has been lethal to opposing teams when the bases are loaded. Counting his double Monday, LaHair is a sensational 6-for-7 in bases loaded situations with an eye-popping 14 RBI.
Lindor later added a solo homer in the fifth, his sixth of the year, and Ollie Linton chipped in an RBI single in the sixth to make it 7-0. Jake Lowery finished with three hits on the night, and Naquin two.
The offensive output was more than sufficient for the steady righthander Colon, who started and won for the RubberDucks. Colon (7-4) worked seven innings and allowed just one run on six hits. For the second straight start, he did not walk a batter. He fanned six hitters on the night. In his last two starts, Colon has worked 15 innings and given up a total of three runs.
Bryan Price and Shawn Armstrong finished the game with an inning of scoreless relief each. The RubberDucks turned a pair of 4-6-3 double plays, giving the team 81 double plays on the season.
The RubberDucks and SeaWolves will play game two of the series Tuesday night at 7:05. RHP Will Roberts (7-7, 3.67) will oppose Erie RHP Warwick Saupold (3-8, 6.52). The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
The Akron RubberDucks are the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The 2014 season is the 18th since moving to Canal Park and the first as the RubberDucks.
