New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
PORTLAND, Maine - On the day the announcement was made, Fisher Cats lefty Daniel Norris showed the Portland Sea Dogs (50-27) why he was named to the MLB SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game. In his second Double-A start, Norris struck out 10 Sea Dogs to power the Fisher Cats (32-44) to a 5-1 win at Hadlock Field. He allowed just one run over 5.2 innings to help the Fisher Cats even the series at one win each.
New Hampshire got on the board first, netting a first-inning run against Mike McCarthy. Kenny Wilson tripled to begin the game, and then scored on a groundout by Matt Newman for a 1-0 lead. The run represented the fifth time in five games that the Fisher Cats scored first on the road trip.
They added to the lead in the fourth with a three-run frame. Newman led off with his fourth home run, a solo shot on a 0-2 pitch to right field. With one out, Jonathan Jones tripled, and then scored on a single by K.C. Hobson. Hobson advanced to third on a hit by Chung before scoring on Kevin Nolan's sacrifice fly.
New Hampshire added one more run in the fifth courtesy of Jones. With men at first and second, he laced a two-out single to right to score Newman for a 5-1 lead.
That was more than enough for Norris, who cruised through his first five innings allowing only three hits along the way. He walked his way into trouble in the sixth, issuing two free passes before exiting the game. Tyler Ybarra allowed one of those runners to score to make it 5-1 at the time.
Norris' final line read 5.2 innings with three hits, three walks, and one run. His ten-strikeout performance was his second this season and the third of his career. He now has 19 strikeouts in 11.1 innings in a Fisher Cats uniform.
Jones continued his tear with a pair of hits and another RBI. Newman finished 1-3 with his homer, two RBI, and two runs. Wilson had a pair of hits and a walk while Hobson delivered his second hit and second run batted in since joining the Fisher Cats.
Ybarra teamed with Randy Boone and Gregory Infante to pitch the final 3.1 innings without giving up a run. Mike McCarthy (L; 6-3) took the loss for Portland allowing four runs in four innings.
The series and road trip will come to an end with the rubber game of the Portland series on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. Righty Scott Copeland (5-6, 3.81) takes the ball against Portland ace Henry Owens (903, 1.99). Radio coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. with Tom Gauthier on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats return to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on Thursday night to start a five-game series with the New Britain Rock Cats. The homestand includes two fireworks shows, a Friday night doubleheader, and a Sunday hat giveaway.
