February 28, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Red Deer Rebels News Release

After a thrilling overtime victory over Portland the night prior, the Rebels welcomed the red hot Victoria Royals to the Enmax Centrium Saturday night.

FIRST PERIOD

The Royals opened the scoring just under five minutes into the game. Vladimir Bobylev took a nice feed from Chaz Redekopp and beat Trevor Martin for his 22nd goal of the year.

Victoria went on to dominate much of the opening period until the Rebels tied it up with 1:10 remaining. Evan Polei chipped the puck behind the Royals net to Adam Helewka, who found a wide open Michael Spacek in the slot. Spacek blasted home a one-timer for his 16th goal of the year, evening the score at 1-1.

SECOND PERIOD

Victoria retook the lead 5:36 into the middle frame when Jack Walker went five hole on Martin for his 27th goal of the year.

Red Deer tied things up for a second time when Luke Philp, shooting from along the goal line, beat Coleman Vollrath for his 100th career WHL goal. The shorthanded marker evened the game 2-2 at the 9:33 mark.

THIRD PERIOD

Tyler Soy took advantage of an errant Rebels drop pass to go in alone and beat Martin for his 37th goal of the year, giving Victoria a 3-2 lead 3:35 into the final frame.

Two-time World Junior defenceman Joe Hicketts gave the Royals a two goal lead with a top shelf blast from the point with just over 11 minutes remaining. The powerplay goal made it a 4-2 game.

Victoria continued to pull away as Matthew Phillips would net his 34th goal of the season at 11:56 to make it 5-2.

Hicketts, falling in front of his own net, fired the puck the length of the ice for a short handed, empty net goal with 2:34 to go. Victoria cruised to a 6-2 victory over the Rebels.
