Kennewick, WA - With the season windowing down, the intensity is building as the points become precious. And, the Americans made sure to grab two big points Saturday night.
Parker Bowles and Jordan Topping each notched two goals, as the Tri-City Americans (30-28-2-1, 63 pts) used a 4-goal third period to race past the visiting Prince George Cougars (33-26-3-1, 70 pts) 7-2 in front of 4,341 rowdy fans at the Toyota Center. With the win, the Americans kept pace in the race for a Wild Card spot, sitting just 4 points back of Spokane and Kamloops. The win also clinched the season series for Tri-City, who won the 4-game series with Prince George 3 games to 1.
Despite what the final score would suggest, it was the Cougars who raced out to an early lead. Just 1:09 into the contest, Chase Witala notched his 36th goal of the season, putting the Cougars on top 1-0.
But, nearly five minutes later, Bowles responded for Tri-City, picking up his first of two goals on the night and tying the game at 1.
The game would remain knotted at 1 until late into the second period. Then, with 7:34 left in the period, Morgan Geekie scored his second goal in his last 3 games to give Tri-City the 2-1 lead. The Cougars, though, would answer five minutes later, as Brad Morrison netted his 24th goal of the season. But, with 46 seconds left in the second period, Topping gave the Americans a lead they never relinquished.
In the first 10 minutes of the third period, Bowles, Vladislav Lukin, Topping and Nolan Yaremko all netted goals to put the game well out of reach.
Nick Sanders was in net for the Americans, coming away with 30 saves in the win. Meanwhile, Nick McBride took the loss for Prince George, after allowing 7 goals on 38 shots faced. Tri-City finished the night 2-of-5 on the power play, while holding the Cougars scoreless on their 4 power play chances.
The Americans' busy week continues tomorrow, Sunday, February 28, as they travel across the mountains to take on the division-leading Everett Silvertips (35-21-4-2). Game time is 4:05pm at XFINITY Arena. Tri-City currently leads the 8-game season series 3-2, having won the most recent match-up back on February 19, a 2-0 win at Toyota Center. Fans can catch all the action live, via WHL Live, at the Americans' home away from home, Kimo's Sports Bar & Brewpub, in Richland. The game will also air live on NewsTalk 870 AM, starting with the Americans' pre-game show at 3:45pm.
