Four Game Road Trip Starts with 3-2 Loss to Silvertips

February 28, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Tri-City Americans News Release

EVERETT, WA. The Tri-City Americans (30-29-2-1, 63 pts) playoff positioning remained unchanged after dropping a 3-2 decision to the Everett Silvertips (36-21-4-2, 78 pts) in front of 4,512 fans at the XFINITY Arena in Everett on Sunday evening. The Americans penalty killing unit has been getting better as of late, but giving up 7 power play chances to the Silvertips in this game would be the deciding factor in the end.

Coming into this game, Tri-City was 22-11-0 when scoring first this season. At 2:17 of the first period, it looked like that stat would be in the Americans' favor as Parker Aucoin buried a shot from the point to notch his 4th goal of the season. Brendan O'Reilly was given the only assist and Tri-City was off and running. It was Everett, however, that would get the upper hand in the period. At 7:22, Patrick Bajkov scored his 16th of the season for Everett on the power play. Roughly 3-and-a-half minutes later, Tri-City defenseman Dakota Krebs lost the puck in front of the Americans' net and Carson Stadnyk was able to beat Evan Sarthou for his 19th goal of the season for the Silvertips. Everett went 1-for-4 on the power play in the opening frame and outshot the Americans 15-5.

After a quiet second period, the 3rd would get interesting. Everett Defenseman Lucas Skrumeda was called for hooking on O'Reilly and the Americans headed to their 3rd power play. This time they would make it count as Americans captain Beau McCue had a beautiful redirect goal to tie the game at 2 at 4:22 of the period. It was McCue's 22nd goal of the season with the lone assist going to Brandon Carlo. Tri-City's chances would continue as Everett center Dario Winkler was given a double-minor for high-sticking after drawing blood on Morgan Geekie with a stick to the face. The momentum began to shift, however, as Everett put up a strong penalty kill, and then saw the penalty shortened as Carlo was called for high sticking to send the game back to even strength. Just a minute-and-a-half after Carlo's penalty expired, he again found himself in the box, this time for tripping. Everett would get their 7th power play opportunity of the game. It proved to be the difference as Winkler scored his 6th of the season for the Silvertips, which would be the eventual game winner, and gave Everett the 3-2 lead with 2:45 left to play in the game. Tri-City goaltender Evan Sarthou had a strong outing stopping 27-of-30 shots for the loss, while Carter Hart stopped 18-of-20 for the win. Tri-City went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Everett was 2-for-7 on the man advantage. The season series is now tied at 3 wins for each team.

With the loss, the Americans failed to gain any ground on the rival Spokane Chiefs (29-24-5-4, 67 pts). Tri-City sits 4 points back of Spokane for the 8th and final Western Conference playoff spot. The Americans will stay on the west side of the state for a couple of days to prepare for a matchup against the Seattle Thunderbirds (35-23-3-0, 73 pts) on Tuesday evening at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Wa. Game time is 7:10pm. The Americans lost the last game to the Thunderbirds, 4-2, on February 26th in Kennewick. You can listen to the game on NewsTalk 870 or watch the game through WHL Live or at Kimo's, your Americans home away from home.
