Hurricanes Double up Oil Kings 8-4

February 28, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

The Edmonton Oil Kings came into Lethbridge facing a slumping Hurricanes team but were unable to add to their demise despite a three point effort from Dysin Mayo falling to them 8-4 Saturday night.

After jumping out to a 1-0 lead the Hurricanes leaders took over as Brayden Burke and Tyler Wong combined for five points and goaltender Stuart Skinner stopped 31 shots for the win in what could be a potential first round match up in the post season.

"In general just a disappointing effort," said Oil Kings Assistant Coach Ryan Marsh. "We had some traction coming in with a couple of wins. We were a little bit shorthanded and a younger look on the backend but disappointed with falling behind."

Mayo got things going for the Oil Kings walking in and going top corner for his 5th goal this season. But it was all Lethbridge from there as they scored four goals in the first, two in the second and two in the third.

Payton Lee started for the Oil Kings but was pulled after the first allowing four goals on 10 shots. Patrick Dea came in to start the second and stopped 15 of 19 shots. The Oil Kings were 2/4 on the powerplay and 3/8 on the penalty kill in the losing effort.

"They had two powerplay goals in the second. After so many kills the number one unit in the league will eventually cash in," said Marsh.

Brandon Baddock had the second Oil Kings goal as he tucked in his 21st on the year. The goal came on the man advantage and is the captain's 6th on the PP. Colton Kehler had the third Edmonton goal, which was his 15th and Brett Pollock had the final goal, his 25th on the year.

The Oil Kings were playing with a depleted defence corps as Brayden Gorda and Anatolii Elizarov didn't make the trip due to injuries and Ben Carroll was unable to go tonight after feeling the effects from a hit last night in Cranbrook. That meant a call up to affiliate player Jayden Platz from St. Albert.

"It's a tough game to come in," said Marsh. "But I thought he did good. He played with some poise and he is going to be a good piece for us going forward."

Mayo's three points now gives the Victoria, BC native 130 career points with the Oil Kings, which is first in the all-time points from a defenceman category.

Edmonton will have to shake this one off quickly as they travel home tonight and host the Victoria Royals Monday morning at 11:30am for the 7th annual hockey hooky game.
