Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL (2nd Atlantic Division, 8-6-0-0=16), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, defeated the Trenton Devils (3rd Atlantic Division, 5-5-0-1=11), 5-2, at Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. For the first time this season, the Royals lost a game in which the team scored the game's first goal (7-1-0-0). The loss snapped Reading's win streak at five and dropped the Royals' record to 2-2-0-0 against the Devils. Goaltender Matt Dalton (loss, 4-3-0-0, 22/26) had his personal win streak stopped at three. Trenton's Jeff Lerg (win, 4-1-0-0, 34/36) was excellent in registering his second win of the year over the Royals. For the fourth straight game, the Royals power play was held off the board (0-3). Trenton failed to score on their only power play chance of the game (0-1).
The Royals struck first 1:37 into the game when Ryan Cruthers sprang Yannick Riendeau with a long pass from deep in the defensive zone to the offensive blue line. Riendeau blew behind the Trenton defense and fired low, five-hole for his first of the season in his second game with the Royals. The Devils bounced right back to tie 2:27 later when Tony Zancanaro fired from deep on the right wing side. Dalton made a stick stop and appeared poised to cover, but a crashing Devil, who appeared to be Jeff Prough (but the goal was credited to Jeremy Akeson), got enough of the loose puck to punch it through. 1:29 after that, the Royals re-took the lead when Eric Castonguay picked off a Devil break out pass and fired from the high slot. Lerg made the save on the original shot, but Castonguay followed up and batted through the rebound for his second of the year.
The Devils tied the game at two 12:50 into the second period. A relentless Trenton fore-check resulted in a turnover in Reading's defensive zone, and Darcy Zajac fed Ryan Hayes in the slot for a quick one-timer that beat Dalton low to stick side for his fourth of the year. Trenton got what proved to be the game winner with just six seconds left in the second period. Reading was called for an icing infraction, and Trenton won the ensuing offensive zone face-off. Ryan Ginand took a shot from low in the left circle that hit a Royals' defender and fell to the top of the crease, where Ginand was able to reach in and sweep the puck between Dalton's legs for his third of the year. Trenton got some insurance early in the third when T.J. Miller ripped one from the left point that Taylor Vichoreck deflected high short-side for his first as a pro 2:24 into the final period. From Reading's perspective, the team created several grade-A scoring chances through the latter of portion of the second and during a couple segments in the third, but Lerg kept the Royals at bay and a 175 foot empty netter by Gord Burnett iced it for Trenton.
The Royals are off on Saturday, but return to action on Sunday (November 21 @ 5:05) when they'll face the top team in the Atlantic Division, the Elmira Jackals. There will be a post-game skate with the players presented by the Body Zone Sports and Wellness Center on Sunday. The Royals game night broadcast will kick off with the pre-game warm-up show presented by The Works at Wyomissing will kick off on the Royals Broadcast Network (WRAW 1340 am in Reading, www.1340wraw.com) at 4:35 pm.
