Daren Machesney's first win in Victoria backstops team to 4-3 win over Ontario

Ontario, CA - In a Friday night match-up at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, the Victoria Salmon Kings took on the Ontario Reign. The Salmon Kings started Daren Machesney, while the Reign gave Kellen Briggs the call in net.

Ontario opened the scoring at 5:23 of the first after Chaz Johnson deflected an Aaron Lewadniuk shot past Machesney blocker side. The tally was Johnson's third of the year. The Salmon Kings evened the score at 10:03 when Matt Stefanishion scored his second goal of the season. Stefanishion deflected Rob Hennigar's shot from the right boards past Briggs into the net. Ryan MacMurchy gave the Salmon Kings the lead at 10:42 on a shorthanded marker. MacMurchy burst in on a breakaway deking Briggs to the left side to record his fourth goal of the year. Brett O'Malley notched his first of the season and Ontario's second goal of the game on the power play at 18:48 after shooting the puck through the legs of Machesney from the right face-off dot. The teams took their 2-2 tie into the second period.

Rick Cleaver regained Victoria's lead at 4:08 after powering his way to the net and capitalizing on his second shot, beating Briggs over the blocker. The marker was Cleaver's fourth of the year. Michael Wilson doubled the Salmon Kings' lead at 6:45 with his first of the season on the power play. Wilson fired a slap shot past Briggs blocker side from the top of the right face-off circle. Victoria took their 4-2 lead into the third frame.

Lewadniuk cut the Salmon Kings lead to one four minutes into the final frame after picking up a loose puck in the slot, shooting it past Machesney. The goal was Lewadniuk's third of the year. Ontario pressured with an extra attacker late in the period but could not secure the game-tying goal. Salmon Kings 4 Reign 3.

The Salmon Kings continue their set of three games, in three nights, in three cities versus the Condors in Bakersfield tomorrow with puck drop at 7:00 p.m. The road trip wraps up this Sunday, November 21st at the Stockton Arena with a 4:00 p.m. contest versus the Stockton Thunder.
