Royals Come Back Effort Doused In Cincy

November 6, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release

Cincinnati, OH - The Reading Royals (3-5-0 = 6; 6th North Division) of the ECHL fell behind 4-0 in a six minute and forty second span in the first period, and despite mustering a credible come back effort in the second, couldn't pull it off, as the Cincinnati Cyclones pulled away to win, 7-3. Reading's Danny Taylor (loss, 1-4-0; 17/24) was left to his own defenses on an inordinate number of odd-man rushes for the Cyclones; while the Cyclones Kyle Gajewski (win, 2-2-1; 33/36) was able to keep the Royals attack at bay during several critical moments. The Royals were one for four on the power play and picked up a short-handed goal; while the Cyclones went two for five with the man advantage.

After a rather methodical and patient start for both teams, the flood gates opened up 11:18 into the game when Thomas Beauregard had a tap-in finish on an odd man rush with teammate Mark Van Guilder. Thirty-five seconds later it was Olivier Latendresse's turn to finish a two-on-one break as he knocked a Jimmy Kilpatrick dish out of mid-air and then swiped it home for his fifth of the season. 3:32 later it was 3-0 Cincinnati, when Michael Cohen slipped behind the Reading defenders and finished a break on Taylor for his fourth of the season-three of which have been scored against the Royals. Latendresse finished off the scoring spree 2:33 later, when ended a multi-rebound sequence in tight on the Royals' goal by jamming the puck home.

The Royals began the comeback effort 45 seconds into the second period, when Mac Faulkner threw a wrister from the right point that seemed to catch Gajewski off guard for his team leading fourth goal of the season. Reading cut the lead to 4-2 at the 13:38 mark of the second when Matt Herneisen bagged a power play goal. Dan Rudisuela forced a pass to the middle of the ice where Herneisen corralled and fired a low hard shot behind Gajewski for his second of the year. The Royals then drew within one 16:43 into the second with the team's third short-handed goal of the year. After stealing in the neutral zone, Brock Hooton carried into the offensive end on the left wing side and ripped a shot on goal. Gajewski made the stop but bobbled the rebound and Kirk MacDonald swept in, took control and bagged his third goal of the year.

Cincinnati bounced right back, however, with a power play goal thirty-three seconds later, when Barrett Eghoetz made a brilliant pass from behind the Royals goal to a charging T.J. McElroy, who fired it home for his first goal in his first game with the Cyclones since being re-assigned from the Milwaukee Admirals in the AHL. That goal seemed to take a little starch out of the Royals' comeback hopes; and whatever starch was left was completely washed out with back-to-back odd-man rush goals late in the third period for Beauregard (14:15, 3rd) and Latendresse (16:30, 3rd)-his hattrick goal of the night (and his fifth goal against the Royals in three games played this year).

The Royals take a day off before returning to the road for a pair in Johnstown, Pennsylvania against the Chiefs on Friday (November 7; 7:00 pm) and Saturday (November 8; 7:00 pm). The Royals then return home to the Sovereign Center on Sunday (November 9; 5:05 pm) for Military Appreciation Night. This weekend's games will be broadcast live on the Royals' Radio Network presented by Transmissions by Arbogast (WRAW 1340 am in Reading; and WLAN 1390 am in Lancaster). The pre-game show presented by the Works at Wyomissing will kick off at 7:00 pm. To become a part of Royals hockey, call 610-898-PUCK or log onto www.royalshockey.com.
