Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charleston, S.C. - During the first meeting with the South Carolina this season, the Charlotte Checkers were shut out by Stingrays goaltender Bobby Goepfert and lose 3-0.

The Checkers had a two man advantage in the early stages of the first period but couldn't capitalize. As the first penalty expired, the Stingrays took advantage of a loose puck at center ice. South Carolina forward Trent Campbell flipped a sharp angle shot over the shoulder of Checkers netminder Maxime Daigneault at 2:44 on a shorthanded rush putting the Checkers behind 1-0. A late power play goal by the Stingrays extended their lead to 2-0 after Sasha Pokulok fed Paul Mcllveen for a one-timer that blew past Daigneault at 18:09.

Another power play goal from the Stingrays in the second period came from a deflected point shot. Stingrays defenseman Zach Tarkir fired a shot that forward Steve Pinizzotto tipped just behind Daigneault at 14:40. This gave South Carolina a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.

There would be no scoring in the final period as Goepfert held the shutout and helped his team to a 3-0 victory. The teams will have a rematch at Time Warner Cable Arena on Saturday night.
