Aces Scratch Out Point in Loss to Idaho

Alaska Aces News Release

BOISE, Idaho - Jean-Philippe Lamoureux stopped 38 shots over 65 minutes before being out-dueled by his Idaho counterpart Matt Climie in the shootout as the Steelheads nipped the Aces 2-1 before 3,068 Thursday at Qwest Arena.

Rarely tested during regulation and overtime and needing to make just 19 saves, Climie stopped four of five Alaska attempts in the skills competition, while goals by Ben Nelson and Garrett Bembridge, who whistled a snap shot in the top right corner for the winner, allowed Idaho to prevail. The Aces had posted a 3-1 victory in the series opener Wednesday.

The Steelheads (4-3-2) came out blazing in the first period, firing 17 of the game's first 19 shots on goal and taking the lead on a power play tally by Nelson, assisted by Marty Flichel and Bembridge, at 4:55. Alaska, playing without the league's leading scorer, Josh Soares (10g-6a), slowly found its game legs and tied the contest on a power play of its own, as Alexandre Imbeault's shot from point blank range trickled through Climie's pads, along the goal line, and eventually was inadvertently tipped in by Idaho defenseman Travis Wight.

The Steelheads limited the Aces to just four shots on goal in each of the last two periods, but failed to beat Lamoureux and actually had to kill two late Alaska power plays just to force overtime. The Aces (6-2-1) overall remain unbeaten in their last four games but slip a point behind Phoenix (6-2-2 after a win over Fresno Thursday night) in the West Divsion.

Alaska and Idaho wrap up this three-game series tomorrow at 5:10 p.m. ADT, as the Aces complete a stretch of six games in eight nights. The finale will be broadcast live on the flagship home of Aces hockey, KFQD 750 AM, with Peanut Farm pre-game show coverage getting underway at 4:45 p.m., immediately after the Dan Fagan Show.
