Reading Royals News Release
Estero, Florida - The Reading Royals of the ECHL (19-20-3-344, 3rd Atlantic Division), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, were defeated the Florida Everblades (22-20-1-346, 4th South Division), 8-0, at Germain Arena in Estero, Florida. The Everblades struck early and then pulled away in a four period second period, as goaltender Shane Owen handed the Royals the team's third shutout against this season-and the second in the last six games.
Goaltender Jussi Rynnas (loss, 2-2-0-0, 23/29 in 42:58) was left to his own defenses far too frequently, particularly when the Everblades opened the flood gates in the second. Karel St. Laurent (no decision, 7/9 in 17:02) came on in substitution after Florida struck for their sixth goal early in the third. Shane Owen (win, 6-7-0-3) registered his second shutout of the season-but his first for Florida in his second game with the team. Reading's power play was unable to break through in two chances on the man advantage. Florida's final goal came while playing with the man advantage (1-2).
Florida struck on their third shot of the game 2:09 after the opening face-off when Mathieu Roy carried out of the right corner, juked a Reading defender, and cut to the mid-slot. Rynnas stopped Roy's bid, but Trevor Breuss had the inside track on the left side of the crease and punched the rebound in for his eleventh year-which proved to be the game winner.
The floodgates opened for the Everblades starting 7:01 into the second period as they ran off three in a span of 3:10-two of which came in a span of twenty-two seconds-from (i) Rylan Galiardi (his tenth) with a high rocket off the rush; (ii) Leigh Salters (his twelfth) who redirected a diagonal down pass from Mike Ratchuk at the left side of the crease; and (iii) Matt Beca (his thirteenth), who finished on a multi-shot rebound attack from the top of the crease. Salters made it 5-0 15:53 into the second when he waltzed down the slot and slipped one just inside the left pipe for his second of the night.
Florida added three in the third, including a quick shot from the right half wall by Ryan McGinnis that slipped through on the short-side on Rynnas, who was scrambling to get back into position after swiping a puck that had slipped behind him out of the crease, 2:58 into the period. Former Royal Matt Marquardt made it 7-0 with a rocket off the rush out of the right circle that blitzed by St. Laurent on the short-side 8:00 into the third. Defenseman Mike Ratchuk bagged a power play goal with a one-time blast out of the right circle 12:37 into the period to cap the scoring at eight.
