Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has acquired forwards Chris Stevens and Peder Skinner and defenseman Brett Thurston from the Phoenix Roadrunners in return for the rights to defenseman Kevin Schaeffer and future considerations. In a separate transaction, the Royals loaned defenseman Patrick Wellar to the Hershey Bears of the AHL.
Stevens (5'10/200) (22), a second year pro who hails from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, has registered one assist and twelve penalty minutes in seven games with the Roadrunners this year. Last season, Stevens, who tied for the team lead with thirty-two regular season goals for the Medicine Hat Tigers' team that qualified for the Memorial Cup Tournament in 2006-07, scored eight goals and picked up seventeen assists (twenty-five points) and 110 penalty minutes in sixty-seven games with Phoenix. Skinner (5'8/160) (22), a second year pro who hails from Isle-aux-Morts, Newfoundland, has scored one goal and assisted on five others in sixteen games for the Roadrunners this season. In mid November, Skinner played three games with the Lake Erie Monsters of the AHL, scoring a goal and picking up two penalty minutes. Skinner, who was selected to represent the Roadrunners in the ECHL All-Star Game last January in Stockton, California, led all first year players in Phoenix last season with fifty-four points (23g-41a=54pts) in 2007-08. Thurston (6'0/220) (26), a second year pro who hails from Strathmore, Alberta, has registered one assist and forty-two penalty minutes in twenty games with the Roadrunners this year. Last season, Thurston, who played 167 CIS games in four seasons at the University of Calgary, scored a goal and registered eleven assists and 106 penalty minutes with the Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League. After the completion of his senior season at the University of Calgary, Thurston joined the Eagles for their run to the 2007 President Cup Championship in the CHL.
It is expected that Stevens, Skinner and Thurston will be in the Royals' lineup on Friday night (December 5, 2008; 7:35 pm) when Reading travels to First Arena in Elmira, New York to take on the Elmira Jackals. Friday's game will be broadcast live on the Royals Radio Network Presented by Transmissions by Arbogast (True Oldies WRAW 1340 am in Reading; and The Ticket WLAN 1390 am in Lancaster), as well as on the internet via webcast hosted by Sportsjuice.com, which can be accessed through the Royals website.
