September 1, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON, MA - RHP Brad Guy tossed a complete-game shutout in a 5-0 Rox win the first game of a doubleheader and the Rox scored seven runs in the third inning en route to a 8-4 win and doubleheader sweep over the New Jersey Jackals as the Rox clinched their third playoff berth in five years before 3,880 at Campanelli Stadium. The two wins give the Rox their first doubleheader sweep of the season; the Rox will be at least the #3 seed in the four-team Can-Am League Playoffs that begin on Wednesday, September 6th. The Rox have won 48 games in 2006 and have a chance with wins in the final three games of the current five-game series to post the best regular season record of any Rox team.
Guy was magnificent in the early game, stranding the bases full in the first inning, and proceeding to retire 19 consecutive batters in the third Rox complete-game shutout of the season. The Rox scored four runs in the third inning on an RBI single by 1B Francisco Lebron and a three-run HR off the bat of C Jason Radwan. 3B Jeff LaRue added an RBI double in the fifth inning, his second two-bagger of the night.
Trailing 3-0 into the third frame in the second game, the Rox sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored seven runs in a huge outburst. New Jersey RHP Bryan Gall's wild pitch plated the first run, while RBI doubles by DH Guye Senjem and LaRue made it a 3-3 game. RF Joe Hough plated the go-ahead runs with a two-run single, and SS Mike Scanzano drove home two more in the inning with another two-run single. RHP Kyle George pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the win.
Earlier in the day, the Rox announced that Manager Chris Miyake will return for his second season in 2007. Miyake's club has three games remaining in the regular season, starting tomorrow at 7:05 PM against New Jersey when LHP Chris Trevino makes his first Rox start on the hill.
