New Haven County Cutters News Release

WEST HAVEN, CT - After taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning, the New Haven County Cutters (25-18, 50-38) did not post a single base hit the rest of the way but held on to defeat the Nashua Pride, 3-2, Friday night in the first of a four-game series at Historic Yale Field.

With the win, the Cutters now hold a 2.5 game lead over Brockton, with three to play, for the second seed in the playoffs. The Rox swept a doubleheader against New Jersey on Friday.

The Pride entered the ninth inning trailing 3-1 but loaded the bases with just one out. LHP Cory Willey then came out of the bullpen and walked the first batter he faced, trimming the Cutters lead to 3-2 before he retired the next two batters to pick up the save (1).

First baseman Chris Gaskin extended the Cutters' lead to 3-0 in the second when he lined a two-run double into the left field corner.

Designated hitter D.J. Boston put the Cutters on the board in the first inning with an RBI infield single.

Cutters' starter LHP Rolando Valles (9-5) was extremely effective in his 6.0 innings of work, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts to earn the win. He retired the first 10 batters of the game before surrendering a double to shortstop Elliott Ayala in the fourth inning.

RHP Jason Paul (2-3) started for the Pride and allowed three runs on four hits in 7.0 innings and took the loss.

After the Cutters took their 3-0 lead in the second inning they were held to just two walks and a batter reaching on a strikeout-error.

Ayala collected two doubles, overall, and scored in the fourth inning on catcher Tom Rojas' RBI single.

Game two of the four-game series is set for Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

RHP Courtney Hall (4-4, 3.82 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Cutters with the Pride sending RHP Jarrad Lavergne (2-5, 5.22 ERA) going for the Pride.
