Brockton Rox News Release

BROCKTON – The Rox sold the rights today to right-handed relief pitcher Tony Runion to the Seattle Mariners.

Runion, 32, is in his 11th season of professional baseball. He was originally drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 58th round of the 1993 draft. He was also in the San Diego Padres' and Pittsburgh Pirates' organizations. Runion, a native of Covington, Ky., and a graduate of Duke University, signed with the Rox May 4, 2004.

Runion (1-2, 2.67, 15 saves) was among the league leaders in saves and appearances this season. His 15 saves are six shy of the Rox team record.

"Tony was one of our top performers this season," said Rox general manager David Sacchetti. "He represented the Brockton Rox organization well both on and off the field. We wish him well and hope he continues to succeed."

Runion is the second Rox player sold to a major-league organization this season. On June 29, the Rox sold the rights to right-handed pitcher Robert Averette to the Baltimore Orioles. Averette is currently 4-1 with a 3.67 ERA for Baltimore's Double A Bowie Baysox.

Runion has been assigned to the Tacoma Raniers, the Triple A affiliate of the Mariners in the Pacific Coast League.
