August 5, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
Durham, N.C. -- Brockton's Tony Runion became the seventh Northeast League player to be sold this season when the Seattle Mariners purchased him on Thurs., Aug. 5. He will report to Triple-A Tacoma and become the teammate of former Quebec Les Capitale Jeff Harris, who was the first NEL player bought this season (June 3). Runion is the 28th NEL alum to appear on an affiliated team's roster and second from Brockton as Robert Averette was sold to Baltimore on June 30.
Runion, who was a 2004 All-Star, was 1-2 with a league-leading 15 saves and posted a 2.67 earned run average. In 27 innings of work, he has allowed 23 hits and surrendered only 11 runs, eight of which were earned. Runion has struck out 30 compared to only six walks. The right-handed reliever has only allowed two runs or more in one of his 28 appearances.
Runion was originally drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 58th round of the 1993 MLB Draft. Aside from playing with Cleveland, he has also pitched for Pittsburgh's and San Diego's Double-A affiliates. This is Runion's first season with Brockton.
