Rox hold off Spirit, 8-7
August 5, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MAâ The Rox broke a four-game losing streak Thursday night, holding off a furious late-inning rally by the North Shore Spirit to win, 8-7, while setting a Northeast League single-season attendance record. Catcher Brian Jones, despite being shaken up by a foul ball that struck him in the collarbone moments before, tagged out Lucas Taylor at the plate as he attempted to score from second on a Joe Hastings infield hit, one of four hits by the Spirit in their last at-bat. The Spirit, trailing 8-2 entering the eighth, scored four runs in the eighth and another in the ninth on Rob Fischer's RBI single before Rox second baseman Mike Torres fielded Hastings's single on the outfield grass and threw out Taylor, who had entered the game as a pinch-runner. The Rox now have won five of eight meetings against the Spirit, first-half winners of the Northeast League's North Division. The crowd of 3,316 pushed the Rox season attendance to an NEL record 154,436, breaking the record set by the Quebec Capitales last season, with 12 home dates still remaining. A two-run home run in the fifth by Craig Lewis in his last game before he joins the Australian Olympic team and a three-run home run in the sixth by Mike Sandoval, his second home run of the season, helped stake Rox starter Brian Buchanan to a big lead. Buchanan allowed eight hits, including Joe Hastings' two-run home run in the fourth which accounted for the only runs the left-hander allowed in seven innings. Buchanan walked one and struck out a season-high 10 before departing with an 8-2 lead. The win was Buchanan's ninth against three losses this season; only North Shore's Jeremy Sugarman, who was recently sold to the Cincinnati Reds, has more wins (10) this season.
Spirit left-hander Gary Bell (3-2) took the loss, giving up seven hits and eight runs (five earned) in 5 2/3 innings. The Rox won despite being outhit, 15-10. Vic Davilla went 4 for 4 for the losers.
On Friday, we won't have fireworks, but we'll be visited by the ZOOperstars. Nomar Garciaparrot, Harry Canary, and Mia Hamster will join K-O and the Rox for the night.
Tickets are available. For tickets, visit the Rox box office, call (508) 559-7070, or visit www.brocktonrox.com.
