Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA - The Brockton Rox and Ottawa Rapidz stared each other in the eyes on Saturday night at Rapidz Stadium waiting to see which side would be the first to blink. A tightly contested game went to the ninth inning in a 2-2 tie until the Rapidz flinched first. Brockton won the series opener 3-2 Ottawa catcher Kyle Geiger made an errant throw on a stolen base attempt to allow the decisive run to score.

The win required a little creative base running by the Rox in the ninth inning. LF Tony Gonzalez led off the inning with a double and was at third base when SS Dominic Ramos walked with two outs. RF Jud Thigpen was at the plate when Ramos took off for second base. Rapidz C Kyle Geiger threw to second to try and throw out the league's leading base stealer, but his throw was short and skipped away from 2B Jose de los Santos. The error allowed Gonzalez to slide home safely with what would eventually be the winning run.

Rox starter LHP Rolando Viera lasted just five innings in the game, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks, while striking out two. He did not figure in the decision, remains just one win shy of becoming the all-time wins leader for the franchise. Meanwhile, the bullpen was tremendous, with four scoreless innings from RHP Matt Zachary, RHP James Baker, and RHP Jerry Dunn. Baker recorded the win, while Dunn picked up his ninth save of the year.

The Rox and Rapidz square off in game two of the series on Sunday afternoon with a 1:05 PM first pitch. Rox LHP Chris McDonough will start opposite the Rapidz RHP Greg Bunn.
