(OTTAWA, ON) For the first time in their inaugural season, the Ottawa Rapidz hosted the Brockton Rox at Rapidz Stadium. The game featured a thrilling pitcher's duel, with the Rox taking the first game of the three game series 3-2.
The Rox opened the scoring in the top of the second, scoring one run off Rapidz starter Orlando Trias. Phillip Cuadrado doubled and then was sent home when Jason Colson doubled two batters later for a 1-0 Rox lead after two innings.
The Rox scored another run in the top of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Phillip Cuadrado and Francisco Lebron lead off the inning with consecutive singles and both advanced a base on a wild pitch by Trias. Jason Colson picked up his second RBI of the game hitting a sacrifice fly to centre field advancing Cuadrado home to score his second run of the game.
To end the top of the fifth, Felix Escalona made a sensational diving catch exciting the crowd of 2,054 at Rapidz Stadium. The Rapidz carried this momentum into the bottom of the inning scoring two runs to tie the game at two. Jared Lemieux singled and Jereme Milons walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Jabe Bergeron then hit a single scoring Lemieux and Milons to tie the game at two.
The Rox added a final run in the top of the ninth. Tony Gonzalez doubled and advanced to third, Dominic Ramos walked and Gonzalez scored on a double steal for the win.
Rox pitcher James Baker (2-3) earned the win pitching one scoreless inning allowing only two hits. Noel Baca III (1-5) was credited with the loss, allowing one run (unearned) on two hits, two walks and two strikeouts in two innings. Gerald Dunn earned his ninth save of the season for Brockton in the win.
Tomorrow game is "City of Ottawa" day at Rapidz Stadium and will feature the Rapidz' Greg Bunn (0-2, 9.16 ERA) against Chris McDonough (4-1, 4.94 ERA) for the Rox.
