New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The first four New Jersey batters that came to the plate all scored against Nashua starter German Melendez as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Nashua Pride 6-2 on Saturday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Tom Atlee (1-0) made his first career start and allowed just one run on seven hits in five innings. The seven-year veteran had appeared in 210 games out of the bullpen prior to Friday night.
In the top of the first inning, 2B Marcus Sanders led off with a single and scored when the next batter, C Matt Lauderdale, laced a hit-and run double to make it 1-0 New Jersey. DH Luke Allen followed with the first of his four hits in the game to plate Lauderdale and extend the Jackals lead to 2-0. Later in the inning, a sacrifice fly by LF Andrew Larsen and a Craig Maddox RBI single gave New Jersey a 4-0 advantage at the end of an inning of play.
Melendez (1-3) was roughed up for the third time in as many starts, surrendering four runs on six hits while walking two batters as he was pulled from the game with one out in the second inning.
Nashua got on the board in the top of the third inning when SS Sandy Almonte singled home CF Vinny Pennell, who had reached on a fielders choice to make it a 4-1 game. After New Jersey countered with an Allen RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to regain the four-run lead, the Pride pushed a run across in the top of the seventh when Pennell tripled and scored on an Almonte single to cut the Jackals lead to 5-2. In the bottom of the eighth inning, New Jersey added an insurance run when Allen drove home Sanders with his third RBI of the evening to cap the scoring at 6-2.
Allen led the charge offensively, going 4-5 with a double, run scored, and 3 RBIs. Lauderdale also had a good night at the plate, collecting three hits in four at bats. Sanders scored three runs. For Nashua, Almonte went 3-5 and drove in both runs.
The Jackals and Pride finish their three-game series on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. New Jersey right-hander Michael Vicaro makes the start against Nashua's Hideki Nagasaka.
