Worcester Tornadoes News Release

WORCESTER - Despite holding 1-0 and 3-1 leads, the Quebec Capitales stormed back for the game's final six runs and the 7-3 win on Saturday evening at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

With the loss, the Tornadoes (20-14) drop back into second place, one game behind the Capitales. Shaun McNamara had a solid start for the Tornadoes which was foiled by a tough sixth inning. His final line stood at 5.2 innings, 10 hits, four runs (all earned) on one walk and four strikeouts. B.J. Weed was once impressive at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort and one run scored. Chris Colabello, Alex Trezza and Francisco Caraballo picked up Worcester's RBIs.

Weed didn't take long to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, leading off the first inning with a double down the left field line. Scott Grimes followed with a 5-3 groundout, a play in which Weed waited until Patrick Deschenes released the ball before breaking for third. The great baserunning paid off as Colabello hit an RBI groundout for the 1-0 lead.

Quebec tied the game in the fourth with a trio of two-out hits. Jean-Michel Rochon-Salvas started the rally with a single to right. Jose Contreras ensued with a blooper to center then Mike Goss drove in Salvas with a seeing-eye single through the left side for the 1-1 score.

In the bottom of the inning, Worcester took advantage of a Capitales' error with two unearned runs for the 3-1 advantage. After Grimes led off with a single, Colabello hit a double play ball to shortstop, but Contreras threw the ball into right field, advancing the runners to second and third. Trezza followed with a sacrifice fly and Caraballo singled in Colabello for the two-run advantage.

The see-saw battle continued in the sixth when the Capitales scored three times to take the 4-3 lead. Greg Stevens and Salvas led off with singles while Contreras laid down a sacrifice bunt. Goss came through for the second time with a single to make it 3-2 Worcester. Alex Nunez followed with a two-RBI single to give Quebec its first lead of the game (and series) at 4-3.

The Capitales closed out the scoring with three runs in the ninth off Shane Presutti. Eddie Lantigua started it with a one-out double. Stevens was intentionally walked leading to Salvas' two-RBI single that took a bad bounce on shortstop Chuck Jeroloman, finding its way into the outfield. Contreras then hit a single to right field to score Salvas for the 7-3 final.

Worcester concludes its first-place battle on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. with Matt Weagle taking the hill for the Tornadoes.
