
Rox fall to Jackals, 8-5

BROCKTON â The Rox dropped the middle game of their three-game series with the New Jersey Jackals, 8-5, Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium in front of 4,700.
After giving up a run in the first inning and five runs in the second inning to allow the Jackals to jump out to a 6-0 lead, the Rox fought back for four runs in their half of the second. Brian Jones led off the second with a single up the middle and scored on Jake Daubert's double to right-center. With Daubert on third and Francisco Matos on first, Kris Zacuto's fifth home run of the year, a drive to left, brought the Rox within two runs, 6-4.
But the Jackals added two more in the sixth, on solo home runs by Craig Conway and Kevin Grijak, doubling the their lead, 8-4.
The Rox got a run back in the seventh, closing out the scoring, 8-5.
Scott Martin (4-3) took the loss for the Rox. Carlos Figueroa (4-3) pitched two innings to get the win in relief for New Jersey. Fabricio Benitez got his sixth save of the season.
The Rox (1-1, 28-20) and Jackals (1-1, 26-22) meet for the series finale Sunday at 5:05 p.m. at Campanelli Stadium
* * * Francisco Matos celebrated the 10th anniversary of his major-league debut, going 2-for-4, with a run scored. Matos made his first big-league appearance July 17, 1994, as a pinch hitter for the A's vs. the Red Sox....Brian Jones's second inning single was the 300th hit of his career...Matos extended his hitting streak to 11 games, while Torres stretched his hit streak to nine games.
* * * Former Red Sox star Mo Vaughn will be at Sunday's game to help the Rox launch their new partnership with Vaughn and his Hitdog Training and Fitness Center. Vaughn and Hitdog have donated two Hitaway Baseball batting aids to the Rox. Fans will be able to step into the Hitaway batting cages before and during Rox home games to test their batting skills.
"We are thrilled to launch this new venture with Mo Vaughn and Hitdog," said Rox general manager David Sacchetti. "Mo has always been extremely generous to the local community, and we are very happy to have him as part of our team."
* * * The Brockton Rox, 2003 champions of the independent Northeast League, have three additional dates and four additional games on their schedule at Campanelli Stadium.
