
Six early runs enough in Jackals win

Little Falls, NJ â Six runs in the first two innings were enough for the Jackals, as they defeated the Brockton Rox by a final score of 8-5.
In the top of the first, the Jackals picked up a run on an RBI single by Wilton Veras.
The Jackals would bat around in the second, driving Brockton starter Scott Martin out of the ballgame. Craig Conway and John Anderson both started the scoring with RBI doubles. Anderson's drove in two. Kevin Grijak then grounded out, adding one more run for the Jackals. Veras then singled, driving in his second run of the ballgame. .
Brockton would forge a comeback in the bottom of the third. An RBI double by Jake Daubert, and a three run homerun by Kris Zacuto, quickly cut the Jackals' lead to 6-4.
New Jersey picked up two more runs in the top of the sixth, on solo homeruns by Craig Conway and Kevin Grijak. Through six innings, The Jackals held an 8-4 lead over the Rox.
The Rox would inch a bit closer in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded against New Jersey reliever Evan Neiser, Chad Stewart walked, scoring one. The earned run was Neiser's first in 21 and two thirds innings of work.
Rox starter Scott Martin only lasted an inning and a third. Martin gave up six earned runs on seven hits, while walking two. He was the loser.
Brad Whitworth, of the Jackals, pitched four innings, giving up four earned runs, on ten hits. Reliever Carlos Figueroa picked up the win for the Jackals, in two innings of relief. Fabricio Benitez closed the game out for the Jackals, and was awarded his sixth save of 2004.
For the Jackals, Craig Conway was 3-4 with a homerun, a double, and two RBI.
Kris Zacuto was 3-4 for Brockton. He had two singles, a homerun, and three RBI.
The Jackals and the Brockton Rox finish their series on Sunday, July 18, 2004. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. at Campanelli Stadium.
