Pioneers Hammer Their Way Past Quebec

July 17, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Elmira Pioneers News Release

Elmira, NY- Despite a two hour and four minute rain delay the Pioneers managed to keep their bats hot, pounding out eleven hits and nine runs in a 9-4 over Quebec on Saturday night.

Elmira went up early on the first of Rick Elder's two homeruns of the night in the bottom of the first to make it 1-0. In the second the Pio's went up 2-0 this time on an RBI double from Jobu Morita, one of his two doubles and three hits on the night. Elmira would add yet another run in the third as it was Elder launching his second dinger of the evening. In the fourth the Pioneers would strike for the fourth straight inning to make it four nothing as Morita hit his second consecutive double to score Yuji Nerei and make it 4-0.

At that point the rains came and play was stopped for just over two hours. When the game resumed the Pioneers put a five spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sevent. First Cleatus Davidson drove in a pair of runs with a double then Dennis Abreu hit a towering three-run homer, his first of the season to make it 9-0. The Capitales did manage to stage something of a comeback, getting three unearned runs in the eighth inning and another in the ninth, but the Pioneers' offense was too much as they went on to the 9-4 win.

On the mound for Elmira Joe Van Gorder started and had a fantastic outing, pitching four scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and striking out three. Unfortunately because of the lengthy delay Van Gorder was forced to leave the game after four innings of work and was therefore unable to factor in the decision. Reliever Brian Ford got the win working three scoreless innings for his third victory of the season.
