Brockton Rox News Release

WORCESTER, MA - Worcester RHP Junior Guerrero and LHP Greg Montalbano combined on a six-hit shutout as the Brockton Rox fell for the first time in six games, ending a five-game winning streak in a 5-0 loss to the Worcester Tornadoes before 2,334 at Hanover Insurance Park. RHP Joey Baker took the loss for Brockton despite allowing just three runs in six innings on the hill. The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when LF Josh Beauregard hit a solo HR to center field to end the shutout and give the Tornadoes their first lead of the series, one which they never relinquished. SS Mike Scanzano finished 0-4 to end a seven-game hitting streak and the Rox fall two games under .500 (16-18) with the loss. The teams have split the first two games of the four-game series. The Rox have yet to win a game on the weekend; they are 0-12 on Saturday and Sunday.

Baker allowed just three hits including two infield singles in his first five innings. After allowing the HR to Beauregard in the sixth, Baker allowed another solo blast, this time to Worcester C Onix Mercado leading off the seventh. After allowing a double to DH Miles Page, Baker came out of the game, replaced by RHP Wayne Lundgren. RBI singles by CF Lucas Taylor and 2B Tucker Frawley put the Tornadoes out in front 4-0. 3B Jeff LaHair added a run for the Tornadoes with a two-out run scoring single off RHP David Lipson in the bottom of the eighth.

The Rox had just two runners at second base in the game as they were shutout for the fourth time in 2006. PH/RF Joe Hough did have his third hit of his pro career in just his sixth at-bat, a single in the ninth inning. Tomorrow the Rox square off against the Tornadoes in the third game of the series with RHP John Boker (4-1, 3.51 ERA) facing Worcester RHP Matt Weagle (1-0, 1.48 ERA) at 2:05 at Hanover Insurance Park in Worcester.
