MANKATO- The Rox ran into a hot Mankato team playing their home opener Friday night and matched them hit for hit. It was St. Cloud's defense that proved to be the pivotal factor as the Rox committed five errors in dropping a 10-5 contest at Franklin Rogers Park.
On the bright side, St. Cloud again put up double digits in hits with 14 after smacking ten hits in Thursday's game at Duluth. The Rox only recorded two hits in their season opening loss to the Huskies on Wednesday.
After the Moondogs scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, the Rox answered back with a Phil Imholte (St. Cloud State) RBI single to tie the game. The MoonDogs broke the game open in their half of the second with five runs to make the score 6-1.
St. Cloud's Will Huff (Erskine) led off the top of the third with his first home run of the season to get the Rox within four runs at 6-2. Another Rox run came across in the third inning when Adam Martin (Western Carolina) scampered home on a wild pitch to cut the Moondog lead to 6-3.
With the score 7-3 in the top of the fifth, the Rox mounted another attempt at a comeback. Martin led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and reached third base on a Boo Vazquez (Pitt) single. Travis Enger (St. Cloud State) followed with an RBI single to plate Martin and Vazquez later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-5 heading into the bottom of the frame.
However, the MoonDogs would score the game's last three runs to get their third straight win to start the season. The Rox are now 1-2 after the loss.
The Rox split the season opening two game series with the Huskies and will now travel to Mankato for a single game Friday night with the Moondogs before their home opener on Saturday.
